CLARITY-PD (Causal Links of Air Pollution, Pesticides, and Heavy Metals in Parkinson's Disease) is a Horizon Europe project that investigates the causal links between exposure to air pollution, pesticides and heavy metals and the onset and progression of Parkinson's disease. The project has been selected for funding by the European Commission in a highly competitive two-stage call. Emoda Software, the only partner from Türkiye in the 20-partner consortium, works on explainable causal AI, a clinical decision support system (CDSS) for clinicians and a mobile app for patients and citizens. The project starts on 1 January 2027 and runs for 60 months.

Genetics alone cannot explain why people develop Parkinson's disease, and environmental risk factors are drawing growing research attention. CLARITY-PD focuses on three groups of exposure:
The project aims to clarify the role of these exposures in the development and progression of Parkinson's disease and to generate concrete evidence on preventable risk factors. It combines biomarker discovery, AI-driven risk models and sensor-based exposure monitoring, and validates its findings in a prospective multi-country cohort.
The exposome is the sum of all environmental exposures a person experiences over a lifetime: air, water, food, chemicals and lifestyle. CLARITY-PD studies Parkinson's disease risk factors together within this exposome framework, rather than one at a time.
Emoda leads the project's precision prevention tools, governance, clinical utility and policy translation work package and turns research results into software that doctors and citizens can use. Its work covers:
Emoda brings to the project its experience with the clinical decision support systems built in PERSIST and for acute poisoning, and with mobile health in LUCIA.

CLARITY-PD is carried out by a consortium of 20 partners. The partner list and project website will be added to this page once the project starts.

Emoda Software, an Izmir-based health software company, is the only partner from Türkiye in the 20-partner consortium.
Emoda leads the precision prevention tools work package. It develops the clinical decision support system for doctors and the mobile app for citizens, contributes to the explainable causal AI models and integrates them into the digital platform.
Studies have linked these exposures to Parkinson's disease, but whether the links are causal, and how much each exposure contributes, is not yet clear. CLARITY-PD aims to produce evidence on exactly this question.

Explainable AI does not just give a result; it also shows which factors led to it, so clinicians can see the reasoning behind a recommendation.
The project starts on 1 January 2027 and ends on 31 December 2031 (60 months).
